Downtown Oktoberfest Returns September 19th: Bigger Site, Road Closures

Downtown Oktoberfest returns this Saturday, September 19th, at a new and bigger site at Talbot and Ross streets, and it comes with road closures that will shape downtown traffic all day.

Here is what changes for your commute. Talbot Street closes from Ross Street to Horton Street, and Ross Street closes from Talbot Street to Centre Street, from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday, September 19th. Parking in that stretch will be blocked off ahead of time. The organizers’ own parking map lists a dozen lots within a few blocks, most of them city lots north and south of Talbot, and asks people not to park at Bulk Barn or Food Basics. The city said in July that a temporary transit detour was coming with notice before the event. As of Sunday morning, no such notice had gone up on the city’s news page or its Facebook page, so watch both in the next few days if you ride the bus downtown.

The festival itself is free, runs 2 to 9:30 p.m., and features a keg tapping ceremony, live music, food and drink, games and crafts for kids, photo booths with prizes, and pop-ups from downtown businesses. The Jim Cuddy Band headlines, and the night wraps up with a drone show. The bars close at 9 p.m., and the closing ceremonies and drone show start at 9:10, according to the organizers’ posted schedule. Free rides on the L&PS train run on the hour from 2 to 6 p.m., a short non-stop round trip from downtown to Parkside, but you need a ticket: pick one up from noon at the Railway City Tourism tent on the trail beside the site, between Ross Street and the CASO Station.

The Oktoberfest Faceoff, a 3-on-3 road hockey tournament on Talbot Street near Ross, returns alongside the festival and is now free to enter, the city says. Kids 7 to 11 play from 1 to 4:30 p.m., a Police-versus-Fire game goes at 4:45 p.m., and ages 12 to 15 play from 5:30 to 7 p.m. All genders are welcome, and players bring their own sticks.

Why the new spot? Council heard in July that last year’s site could not handle the crowd, so organizers moved to the larger lot at Talbot and Ross. Council had already declared the festival a “municipally significant event” on June 8th at the St. Thomas Economic Development Corporation’s request, on a motion from Councillor Jeff Kohler seconded by Councillor Lori Baldwin-Sands. That label is more than ceremony: under the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario’s rules, a council designation like that is what lets a public festival qualify for a Special Occasion Permit to sell alcohol. The road closure for the new site followed on July 13th.

If Talbot Street is part of your regular route Saturday, plan around it. The full schedule is posted at downtownoktoberfest.ca, and teams or individuals who want in on the road hockey can register a team or sign up individually online.
