St. Thomas Police Service is taking its free summer event Boredom Busters to a new home this year. Instead of the usual spot in the police station’s parking lot, the event moves to 1Password Park on Wednesday, July 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Samantha Wakefield, STPS’s corporate communications coordinator, told LocVox there was no single reason for the switch. The department just wanted a change of scenery. She called 1Password Park “beautiful,” with plenty of amenities to enjoy.
It shows. The 65 acre park at 355 Burwell Road has a splash pad, a playground, soccer fields, and paved walking trails, and it is home to the St. Thomas Soccer Club.
Youth and families are invited to play basketball, soccer, and road hockey with police officers, then cool off at the splash pad. Victim Services will be handing out free freezies. No registration is needed. Families can just show up, though every child needs an adult with them.
The event’s shape has changed too. In past years, Boredom Busters ran as two separate two hour days, one in July and one in August. This year it is a single four hour day. Wakefield said turnout has reached as many as 75 youth in past years, with some kids staying the whole time and others dropping in for a bit.
Whether you catch twenty minutes of it or the whole four hours, Wednesday, July 29 is set aside for a free day at the park with St. Thomas police.
